Robert H. Gifford papers, 1865 Oct. 30 and Nov. 2.

Statement of R.H. Gifford, 30 Oct. [18]65, written from Beech Branch, S.C., directed to Capt. J.J. Upham, who was commanding Federal garrison at Lawtonville, S.C., concerns an incident involving members of Co. I, 104th U.S. Colored Troops, under command of First Lieutenant W[ellington] Wood, commanding Federal garrison at Beech Branch, Beaufort District [at site now in Allendale County, S.C.]. Gifford complains that his aged father, who had signed the oath of allegiance to the Union and on whose property the incident had taken place, "wishes to know whether his Person and Property can not be protected." In response to action taken by Wood in punishing a vagrant woman found on Gifford's property with stolen sugar cane, the report accuses eight to ten African-Americans of having entered his private yard, approached his door between eleven and twelve o'clock at night, and questioned the veracity of an account of Wood's punishment of the vagrant given by H.M. Parnell, nephew of R.H. Gifford. Orders of Capt. J[ohn] J. Upham, 2 Nov. [18]65, Lawtonville, S.C., forwarding the statement of R.H. Gifford refer the matter to Wood, advise that "Soldiers Conducting themselves as reported ... should be very severely punished," and direct Wood to report his action in the case. The 104th Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry, organized at Beaufort, S.C., April-June 1865; attached to Department of the South; garrison and guard duty at various points in South Carolina until February 1866; mustered out 5 Feb. 1866.
